- In 1899 the Australian psychiatrist John Macpherson (b. 1861) defined hallucinations as follows: "Hallucination may... be defined as a morbid phenomenon, the result of dissociated cerebral action, by means of which a perception that has no objective basis or reality is subjectively perceived by the conscious mind, and projected externally."ReferencesMacpherson, J.
