In 1903 the Swiss psychiatrist, hypnotist, and entomologist August Forel (1848-1931) defined hallucinations as follows. "If the patient sees, hears, or feels things when in reality no corresponding stimuli have affected his eyes, ears, or skin this is called
hallucination (for example, when he hears the voice of an acquaintance who has not spoken or is not there at all)."
